Share the Road Mini Grants
The mini-grant program has been temporarily suspended until further notice.
Through the sale of ‘Share the Road’ specialty license plates, Florida Bicycle Association has established mini-grants to provide funds for programs that focus on motorist and bicycle education and awareness of proper, legal roadway sharing. This grant program will not fund helmet purchase and distribution programs, brochure printing or promotional items (i.e. t-shirts or reflective items) since other funding sources are available for these programs. Preference will be given to efforts that the review committee determines will garner significant media coverage. Provocative approaches are encouraged. Organizations interested in applying for a mini-grant should understand and be willing to meet the following criteria:
TERMS OF MINI-GRANT AWARD
The applying organization understands and accepts the conditions set forth by Florida Bicycle Association:
- Applicant may apply for grants from $500 to $5,000 per year. There is no assurance that the exact amount specified in the grant proposal will be awarded to the applicant.
- Grants will be awarded four times a year in conjunction with quarterly board meetings generally held January, April, June, October.
- A match of equivalent or more dollars and/or in-kind contributions is required to receive grant funds. A detailed proposal of the funding sources for the match and expenditures shall be provided.
- Applicant will use the funds only as specified in the application.
- Applicant agrees to help publicize and recognize the ‘Share the Road’ specialty license plate and Florida Bicycle Association for their support of the grantee’s program.
- Applicant agrees to provide a program progress report within three months from the receipt of the grant funds and a final report at the conclusion of the project.

2010 Grant
Green Mobility Network
Amount: $1682
Program: Bike MS Safety Training. The program will enable participants in the South Florida Chapter Bike MS Ride 2010 to receive bicycle safety instruction in advance of the event to be held 4/17-18/10. Funds will be used to pay League Cycling Instructors (LCI’s) to conduct workshops using experienced group riders as volunteer teacher aides. Skills gained in the class will give riders the tools to be safer, more confident, improve their riding experience, encourage them to ride more often whether in special events, for fun or practical reasons, and better drivers of bicycles and motor vehicles.
2009 Grant
Naples Police and Fire Department
Amount: $1,472
Program: Lights of Bikes Campaign. The department conducts multiple bicycle safety events throughout the year including bikes rodeos and the Lights on Bikes Campaign. This on-going campaign consist of visiting local area businesses and distributing and installing bicycle lights for restaurant employees who are not able to afford them. Restaurant employees are also given bicycle safety brochures while Naples Pathway Coalition (NPC) members explain the bicycle rules of the road. The City of Naples has also begun to air a Bicycle Safety video on their television channel 12. The video addresses the importance of motorist and bicycles working together to reach their destination in a safe and friendly manner. Along with the video, a Power Point presentation is displayed on their channel which also emphasizes bicycle safety and how to share the road.
2008 Grant
Naples Police and Emergency Services Department
Amount: $1,500
Program: Lights of Bikes Campaign. The department conducts multiple bicycle safety events throughout the year including bikes rodeos and the Lights on Bikes Campaign. During the campaigns, light sets and blinkers are installed on the bicycles of needy restaurant workers throughout the city who ride their bikes to and from work at night, and who can’t afford to equip their bikes with the proper lighting. Funds will be used to buy light sets for this campaign as well as for bike rodeos. To further help with the rider’s awareness, members of the Naples Pathways Coalition give restaurant employees bicycle safety brochures detailing the rules of the road.
2007 Grants
Sanibel Bicycle Club
Amount: $1,800
Program: BIKE SANIBEL-BIKE SAFELY. This program will include a three-pronged effort to educate cyclists and motorists, including (1) Permanent signs affixed to rental bikes that list safe biking rules; (2) Posters that further expand and illustrate the safe biking rules to be posted prominently around the island in businesses and other public places; and (3) A publicity effort in local media to raise awareness of the program. Matching funds were acquired from the Sanibel Bicycle Club, Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce, local bicycle rental businesses and other donors.
Marion County Sheriff’s Office
Amount: $2,000
Program: Funds will be used toward the purchase of five additional bikes for neighborhood patrols and rodeos. The bicycle unit provides education to schools and the public and plans to conduct bike rodeos on a monthly basis to target as many of the county schools as possible. The new equipment will provide a minimum of one bike per district (13) for the bicycle unit which patrols in communities through operations addressing share the road concepts of motorists being cognizant of bicyclists and bicycle safety.
Before the grant was awarded, bicycle unit deputies were requested to take a combination Community Training/Road 1 workshop. On November 19, the first combination workshop was held and attended by 10 deputies. Congratulations to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for making bicycle safety education a priority.
2006 Grant
BikeWalk Network, Inc., Tallahassee
Amount: $2,000
Program: The BikeWalk Network, Inc. is an organization composed on local advocates including FSU and TCC students, local business owners and city, county and state employees. The organization will assist area residents, government staff, elected officials and the Capital Regional Transportation Planning Authority (CRPTA) in helping Tallahassee/Leon County move forward in becoming a multi-model community and understanding issues pertaining to the promotion of the concept of roadway sharing. Their website, www.bikewalknetwork.net will be a resource to local cyclists and pedestrians on their rights and responsibilities w/links to the FBA and other sites. Grant funds were used to host a fundraiser/membership promotion event on October 7th, 2006 and establish their website.

Bike Florida-funded (total: $12,270)
St. Marks Trail Association
Amount: $2,000
The St. Marks Trial Association is developing a low wattage radio station dedicated to bicycle and pedestrian issues. They were awarded $2,000 to assist with the purchase of equipment for low wattage radio equipment. The station will broadcast music, as well as local and national information on trails, the environment, bicycling and pedestrian issues.
Pasco Sheriff's Department
Amount: $1,700
The Pasco Sheriff's Office has an active bicycle safety and education program. They received $1,700 to offset the purchase of helmet safety signs to be placed on bike racks at all schools in the county. The funds will also be used to purchase educational video and printed materials for their in-school and community wide bike safety education programs.
Gulfport Police Department
Amount: $1,230
The Gulfport Police Department currently conducts quarterly bicycle rodeos for children of all ages. They received $1,230 to offset the purchase of bikes and equipment to outfit police officers on bikes. The officers will use the bikes in the rodeos, at special events and on regular patrols.
Brevard County MPO
Amount: $1,700
The Brevard County Safety Education Program reaches between 8,000-10,000 people annually. They conduct 60 to 70 bicycle rodeos on an annual basis and 16-17 of their schools conduct the full elementary education traffic safety program. The program received $1,700 to assist with the purchase of replacement bicycles for their bicycle safety program.
Jackson County CTST
Amount: $500
The JCCTST administers bicycle safety programs and bicycle rodeos in elementary schools throughout the county. They received $500 to purchase reflectors and spoke ads to be given to students after successful completion of a bicycle safety rodeo. Funds will also be used to replace coloring books, brochures, etc., that are used as part of their educational format.
City of Delray
Amount: $2,000
The City has an active, city wide bicycle program. They received $2,000 that will be used to supplement the purchase and installation cost of 40 "Share the Road" signs. The signs will be placed at strategic locations to remind motorists and cyclists to exercise caution.
City of Hallandale Beach
Amount: $1,640
The City received $1,640 to supplement the cost of the purchase and installation of "Share the Road" signs and equipment for their police department to use in their bicycle safety programs.
City of Clearwater
Amount: $2,000
The City of Clearwater has an active and comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian safety program. The City was awarded $2,000 to supplement their ongoing multimedia campaign to promote the "Share the Road" message. It will fund the placement of the "Share the Road" message on 20 bus benches along US 19 for six months.
FBA-funded (Total: $10,500)
Tampa Downtown Partnership
Amount: $2,000
The Tampa Downtown Partnership was awarded $2,000 to fund a program guide to kick off the "Change Gears, Bike Downtown" campaign in Spring 2005. The guide will include sections on bicycle safety and rules of the road, a map showing bike racks, shower locations and suggested routes, bikes on buses program, bicycle and pedestrian resources and points of interest within biking distance.
METROPLAN Orlando
Amount: $1,000
METROPLAN Orlando is the metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties—the Orlando Urban Area. This organization was awarded $1,000 towards the production of a bicycle education video to be used in all three counties. "Bicycle Smarts" was produced in cooperation with Orange TV, Seminole County Government TV, and WESH Channel 2.
Seidler Productions
Amount: $7,500
Seidler Productions is a full service media production group located just south of Tallahassee specializing in videotapes, films and interactive media products. Seidler Productions was awarded $7,500 to supplement partnership funding for a video program titled "Realizing and Recovering the Sustainable Green Dollar." The program will promote the Share the Road ethic and specialty license plate.
