St. Petersburg Bicycle Club Spring Classic
The 29th annual SPBC Spring Classic offers four rides through the rural areas of Manatee County. It′s NOT a race. But riders will often break into groups at various speeds to push themselves and compete informally on time. Others simply enjoy the surroundings and the company. The main idea is to have fun. Rides are 20, 36, 60 and 100 miles. We′ll plenty of rest stops with food and drinks and portable restrooms. Support vehicles will be dispatched to anyone needing assistance during the ride. The Spring Classic is open to both SPBC members and non-members alike. This year we′ve moved the event up a few weeks in hopes of cooler weather and that more of our snow bird friends can join us. We′ll leave from the Manatee River Fairgrounds where a light breakfast and coffee will be available. After the rides, enjoy lunch catered by Pipo′s the Original Cuban Cafe, along with two beers compliments of SPBC and music. The Spring Classic is our main club fundraiser. Our lead sponsor is PSCU, a locally based credit union cooperative. This year we will be donating some of our proceeds to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. Advanced registration will be online ONLY. No processing fee. No mail-in registrations. Registration at the event is available but at a higher price. Insulated Polar water bottle guaranteed if you register by Jan. 15. Different sizes will be available while supplies lasts. Wrigley Ride
The Wrigley Ride gives cyclists an opportunity to ride in memory of a loved one and focuses on cycling safety. The tours are chosen for their scenic value as well as their safe conditions. All tours are monitored and rest stops are provided for cyclist comfort. The Wrigley Ride is named after Bryan B. Wrigley who was attending the University of St. Augustine Health Science working toward his doctorate in physical therapy when he was struck and killed in a tragic cycling accident. Bryan was only 23 years old. Bryan was an avid cyclist and rode for the Harrell’s Bicycle World/Garmin team out of Columbia, S.C. His memory lives on through the Bryan B. Wrigley Scholarship at Newberry College, his alma mater and scholarship created by his family. This story is too familiar with cyclists and motorists sharing the road. There are many initiatives to educate cyclists and non-cyclists to create mutually beneficial roads and more education and awareness is needed to prevent accidents. A portion of each entry goes directly to the Bryan B. Wrigley Scholarship Fund. Join the community and fellowship of cyclists coming together to celebrate Bryan and others who loved the sport of cycling.
