CONSERVE BY BICYCLE PROGRAM STUDY SURVEY

Sprinkle Consulting, Inc. is leading the project team for FDOT’s
Conserve by Bicycle Program Study. This study is developing an
objective and reliable method to estimate the energy savings and health
benefits that can be expected if more Floridians rode bicycles.

To estimate energy savings and health benefits, we need to know how far
and how often Floridians ride bicycles. We would appreciate it if you
would provide us with this information by completing an online survey.
The survey is available at
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=541423854152.

Please forward the survey link to others and encourage them to fill out
the survey! Please feel free to contact Herman Huang at (813) 949-7449
or huang@sprinkleconsulting.com if you have any questions. Thanks for
your help with this important Study!

LIVABLE COMMUNITIES WORKSHOPS COMING SOON

The Florida Department of Community Affairs, in conjunction with the
Florida Department of Transportation and the Florida Department of
Health, is sponsoring FREE, one-day Livable Communities Workshops. The
workshops, taught by walkability expert Dan Burden, Billy Hattaway,
P.E., and Ian Lockwood will explore ways to create sustainable, livable
communities.

These FREE Workshops are geared toward design, planning and engineering
professionals, elected officials, developers, law enforcement, public
health professionals, advocates, and anyone else interested in making
Florida a better place to call home.

The workshops will offer technical knowledge, principles, practices and
strategies, and Florida-based case studies that will provide the
information necessary to create visionary, workable and practical plans
leading to safer, more sustainable neighborhoods, villages, towns,
cities and transportation projects and systems.

The workshops will be held in Tallahassee on June 26, 2007, Lakeland on
July 10, 2007, and Port Charlotte on July 11, 2007. Flyers for all
three workshops are attached to this email. To register or get more
information, contact Ken Owens at Glatting Jackson at
kowens@glatting.com or 1-866-347-2734.

CENTRAL FLORIDA BIKE/MOTORIST CRASH STUDY

Metroplan Orlando has published a study of 885 bicycle-motor vehicle
crashes that occurred in Orange, Seminole, and Osceola counties in
2003-2004. The three counties had a total population over 1.6 million in
2004. Local officials and agencies in Florida often seem to have little
idea where bicycle-MV crashes have occurred in their areas, or of the
contributing factors involved. When motorists or cyclists insist that a
road is "dangerous" and propose countermeasures to be taken, little
factual basis is available on which to evaluate their claims, or to
offer alternative recommendations.

The public tends to overestimate the risk of the motorist overtaking
crash type (5.7% of daylight crashes in the Metroplan study, Table K)
and to underestimate the risk of crash types that involve yielding
failures or turning errors on the part of the cyclist or motorist.

The study is posted on Metroplan's downloads page at
http://www.metroplanorlando.com/site/downloads/default.asp.  It's
currently the first item in the "Bicycle & Pedestrian" section.

AND THEN SOME

"What's a higher priority, pedaling your bike or fueling America?"

This fine question was stated by Jim Cooper, Transportation Planner for
the BLM Grand Junction, Colorado field office in a Colorado Springs "The
Gazette" newspaper interview about the mountain bike trails around
Fruita, Colorado.
Mr. Cooper was comparing the importance of constructing mountain bike
trails to energy companies exploration. - Al Brody, Pikes Peak Area
Bikeways Coalition

"To ride a bicycle properly is very like a love affair; chiefly it is a
matter of faith. Believe you can do it and the thing is done; doubt, and
for the life of you, you cannot." -H G. Wells

"Bicycling is a big part of the future. It has to be. There's something
wrong with a society that drives a car to work out in a gym. -- Bill
Nye, "The Science Guy"

"The bicycle is the most civilized conveyance known to man. Other forms
of transport grow daily more nightmarish. Only the bicycle remains pure
in heart." -Iris Murdoch
