If ET isn't riding in a basket mounted on the
handlebars, there are two ways to fly a bicycle free of charge on an
airline.
- Take a folding bicycle that fits in a
suitcase (http://www.bikefriday.com/
or
http://www.bromptonbike.com/). This technique also works on buslines.
- Bicycles of members of cycling
organizations can fly free.
Adventure Cycling members' bicycles can fly
free on Northwest Airlines. Restrictions apply. See
http://www.adventurecycling.org/special/flyfree.cfm.
League of American Bicyclists members'
bicycles can fly free on US Airways, Northwest, TWA, Frontier, American
Airlines, and America West. Restrictions may apply. See
http://www.bikeleague.org/flyfree.htm.
International Mountain Bicycling Association
members' bicycles can fly free on the same airlines. Restrictions may apply.

I've been told that the US Cycling Federation
also has such a program for its members. Its website is at
